About the Group
Women's Work
noun
1. work traditionally and historically undertaken by women, especially tasks of a domestic nature such as cooking, needlework, and child rearing.
(Oxford Languages)
Women have long used women’s work crafts such as knitting, crochet, and embroidery as a form of protest. These types of creative acts have built and strengthened community, communicated critical information, and challenged stereotypes and the status quo.
There is enormous power and healing to be found within the stereotyped “domestic femininity” of needlework.
In times of uncertainty individuals often seek out something to do. Taking action feels like a way to gain some sense of control in an out-of-control world. In searching for the right action to take, we are often met with feelings of hopelessness.
What can one person really do?
One person can stitch. And another person can stitch. And another person can stitch. And then they can stitch together to create community, offer support, and let each other know: “You are not alone.” The group witnesses each others’ pain, joy, sadness, struggles, and triumphs. Stitching together in community ties together our collective energy and amplifies our stories and messages.
